From the very first year of LEGO® Star Wars™ — Qui-Gon Jinn faces Darth Maul in a genuine 1999 set, preserved new with its original box in very good condition.
This is not simply a vintage LEGO® Star Wars™ set. Lightsaber Duel 7101 comes from 1999 — the year LEGO® Star Wars™ itself began. LEGO and Lucasfilm announced their collaboration that year, launching the first generation of sets that would eventually grow into one of LEGO’s most famous themes.
Inspired by Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace™, the set recreates the memorable Tatooine encounter between Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul.
The two included LEGO® Star Wars™ minifigures are Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul, both in their unmistakable original 1999-era designs. Darth Maul appears with his black hood and cape, while Qui-Gon features the classic yellow-headed LEGO® character style used during the earliest years of the theme.
Alongside the two characters is Darth Maul’s compact speeder bike and a brick-built Tatooine moisture vaporator, creating a miniature environment for their lightsaber confrontation.
By modern standards, the build is wonderfully simple — and that is part of its charm. This comes from an era when LEGO® Star Wars™ sets were small, blocky and focused heavily on putting major characters directly into children’s hands.
More than a quarter of a century later, the historical context is completely different.
7101 was one of the original LEGO® Star Wars™ sets released in 1999, during the very first year of a collaboration that continues today. LEGO records 13 Star Wars sets plus a MINDSTORMS Droid Developer Kit launching that year.
And this particular example has something increasingly important for a vintage collectible:
